Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.

Canyon Rim Trail Underpass

The highway detour has shifted to the north side of NM502 allowing the contractor to work on the south side of the road installing precast concrete boxes and retaining walls.

Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)

TLC Plumbing and Utility continues road and utility improvements on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd, Tsankawi St, Oro Ct, Tsankawi Ct, Cedro Ct, and Big Rock Loop South. Utility work will continue Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd and Tsankawi St including new water and gas main lines.

New water service cans and gas service lines to homes will continue to be installed along Capulin Rd and Alamo Rd. Concrete crews will be installing new valley gutters and sidewalks.

Preparation for pavement will commence on Capulin Rd next week.  Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.

Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic around work zones.

Access to residents as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, school bus routes, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to be alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr.)

The bike lane along Canyon Rd adjacent to the construction area remains closed pending repaving.  Bicyclists are encouraged to ride in the driving lane as the material in the bike lane is soft. The sidewalk is open from the Nature Center to the back drive of the Aquatic Center.

From there, pedestrians can walk in the bike lane area between the traffic control devices and construction fence.

The public is also reminded that the “back driveway” to the Aquatic Center is closed to the public due to construction.  Please do not use this area to access the trail.  Please use the trail entrance at the Nature Center to then travel behind the Aquatic Center.

NM 502 Road Closure (State DOT)

NM502 (Main Hill Rd) will be closed along a 2-mile stretch — from mile marker 4 to mile marker 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays while State DOT crews mitigate a rockfall hazard along the roadway. The two-mile road closure begins one mile east of Airport Road at the edge of Los Alamos and continues east to the junction of NM502 and NM 4. Traffic signs and controls will be in place; avoid this area and seek alternate routes such as the Truck Route. Allow additional time for your commute.

Advance Notice: The State DOT also anticipates road repairs for NM502 on the eastern edge of Los Alamos will get underway in September. Additional information will be forthcoming in future Cone Zone reports.

Diamond Drive between West Jemez Rd and Pajarito Rd (LANL)

For the next two weeks, motorists will observe preparations for road work along this stretch of Diamond Drive; work is related to the upcoming Diamond Drive Road Widening Project. Use caution and allow extra commute time.

Los Alamos Canyon Bridge Repairs (LANL):

Traffic continues to be detoured to the east side of the bridge and one lane in each direction as construction work continues on the west side of the bridge. Crews are painting the handrails and preparing to add a fence to increase pedestrian safety. They will then be installing gutters to capture rainwater to increase the safety of the bridge.

Pedestrian/bike access continues to be CLOSED Monday – Friday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.; barriers are being removed as close to 4 p.m. as possible, for access during off-construction hours – but pedestrians and bicyclists should use caution if using the pathway. The estimated duration for work to be completed on the west side of the bridge is two more weeks, weather and schedule dependent.

To avoid congestion and delays, consider using Atomic City Transit as a bus option to cross the bridge. Check out the Route 1 (downtown circulator bus) schedule here.

Motorists are reminded to slow down in the construction area; the speed limit is 15 mph. Allow extra time for your commute during peak travel times in the morning and evening.

Anchor Ranch Rd Milling & Paving (LANL)

Anchor Ranch Rd is expected to re-open on Wednesday. Until then, crews continue to work at Plastics Rd to install a new natural gas pipeline. Traffic will be detoured down Plastics Rd to Shed Rd and back around Anchor Ranch. The Castle Road Gate is open from 6:30-8:30 a.m. and 3:30-5 p.m., Monday through Friday to allow easier access and exit during peak commuting times.
